The IT in HR

I had an interesting occurrence coming into a company where IT reported to the HR leader. At first, I thought it was a brilliant move to put a people-centric experience together for the staff. Soon, I learned it was a temporary arrangement and an unconverted opportunity for the company.

Within a few months, I assumed leadership of the IT function. Over the next 12 months and motivated by the remote work mandates from COVID we streamlined the heck out of the new hire onboarding & setup experience. Company veterans and new hires were making comments on social media about how good they had it. The C-suite never saw such low cost and swift delivery per hire/retire with some big steps up in security & compliance.

I learned that aside from facilities, the systems, devices, and policies around them are the first real manifestations of the company's values for a new hire. These artifacts become regular reminders as maintenance, compliance, renewal, or other recurring program activities occur for all employees.

But, these literally beneficial programs can become a burden to execute, a liability if left incomplete, or an error-prone, fractured process held together with swivel-chair integrations and spreadsheets.

Investment in a structured and orchestrated on/off-boarding workflow built on modern platforms designed to interact with staff where they already are is a bet on people preferring design over chaos. In hindsight, it doesn't seem like an investment but a fait accompli once people have handy access to their digital profile with the company.
